Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is a Heisman Trophy winner (the first freshman to ever win the award). He won the Davey O’brien trophy and the Manning Award, which goes to the best college quarterback in the country. He is a recipient of the Chic Harley award for being the best college football player in the country. He was awarded the AP College Football Player of the year, which is given to the most outstanding college football player.
Manziel owns the record for the most total yards by an SEC player in a game with 576 yards against Louisiana Tech. He has the record for the most total yards in a season by a SEC player when he amassed 5,116 total yards in 2012. He is the first SEC quarterback to throw for at least 3,000 yards and rush for at least 1,000 in a season.
With all his accomplishments being mentioned, an A in conduct seems to be Johnny Football’s toughest challenge.
Johnny has had his share of off field issues. I call it the spoiled kid syndrome. He was born into a family that became wealthy because of the Texas petroleum industry, so he has not had to work for a lot. In his mind, all he has to do is come out and perform on the field, but he fails to realize that there are rules off the field that have to be followed as well. He has always been the star athlete so some rules did not apply.
Manziel began to get in trouble his freshman year at Texas A&M. He was arrested in June of 2012 and charged with disorderly conduct, failure to identify, and possession of a fictitious driver’s license stemming from a fight at a bar. In response to that incident, Manziel stated that he had to make some changes in his life.
In the offseason after his Heisman Trophy winning season in 2012, the controversial issues continued for Manziel. He was invited to participate in the Manning Passing Academy where he can mentor high school kids on the art of playing quarterback. He reportedly left the camp early due to oversleeping and missing some sessions. That same offseason, he also tweeted that he was ready to leave College Station, Texas because he received a ticket for illegally parking on the street. Eventually, that would be the least of his worries. Him possibly recieving money for his autograph resulted in him being suspened for the first half of the season opener.
Despite all the off the field issues, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns after his redshirt sophomore season. Upon arrival, the organization immediately made it known that the distractions would not be tolerated. I guess he did not get the message.
When most players are preparing for games coming up, Manziel has been spotted at parties via photo and video. He has spent time in rehab. His latest problem came after he was named the starter after promising the Browns he’d cleaned up his act. During the team’s off week, a video surfaced that shows him partying back in Texas. That’s not a big issue but a player with his past and after lying to his coach about it, he has been demoted to the 3rd string quarterback.
