The year 2018 was quite the time for Ella Mae. Through her self-title album, which she released in the same year, provided the soundtrack for cuffing season. The album featured the smash, “Boo’d Up,” which was in high demand on multiple platforms, helping it to reach the number 5 spot on Billboard Hot 100.
It’s nothing for an R&B artist to have one hot track, then get lost in the shuffle of Rap songs. The English singer got our attention again with “Trip.” That was a memo to the masses informing us she’s here to stay.

It was evident that the English singer was influenced by 90s R&B of the ’90s with “Own It,” an Adina Howard sample. Though she borrows from the 1998 hit, “T-Shirt and Panties,” she gives the song it’s own identity.
For you guys that wishing you can shoot your shot, Ella Mai’s gives you the heads up that time is of the essence in “Shot Clock.”

Ella Mai debuted number 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums charts.
I try not to measure every current R&B album using the ’90s era as the measuring stick. It’s unfair to the current artists as well as the artists of yesteryear. Sometimes, I can’t help it. The ’90s (and early ’00s) were such a special time –a pivotal time, I might add. It set the bar. I would come to find that it’s not the sound I was in search of, but the “feeling.” A certain energy the artists put in it which the listener would feel on the receiving end. I got that feeling after listening to Ella Mai.
