As the music world continues to mourn the loss of Neo-Soul icon D’Angelo, nothing short of good things has surfaced about the artist from fans, fellow artists, musicians, and hometown supporters who knew him before the fame.
Speaking of the latter, Bill McGee, D’Angelo’s former mentor, spoke highly of the crooner’s generosity after his rise to stardom.
“He came back in 1995,” Mr. McGee told 12 On Your Side. “And performed for free when Brown Sugar came out. So he gave back.”
During the interview, he also mentioned D’Angelo’s musical influences, such as Michal Jackson, Prince, and James Brown. In addition, he noted the artists D’Angelo himself went on to influence, including Chris Brown and Trey Songz, just to name a few.
In the Black-American community, it’s often an unspoken rule to give back in some capacity – and it’s beautiful that D’Angelo did just that. RIP
