Warren G Says Snoop Dogg Was Orignially Intended to Be on “This DJ”

In the mid-90s, Warren G blessed us with a string of G-Funk bops such as “Regulate,” “You Don’t See What I See,” and “This DJ,” just to name a few. Speaking of the latter, if you ever thought for a second that the hook sounded like something Snoop Dogg would say — well, according to Warren, it’s because he actually did.

“Snoop helped me with ‘This DJ,'” Warren G told B-High during a recent sit-down.

“And then I had him on the hook. He was originally supposed to do: ‘It’s kind of easy when you listen to the G’d-up sound. Pioneer speakers bumpin’ as I smoke on a pound.’ That was supposed to be Snoop, but I couldn’t get it cleared. So, I did it.”

At the time, Snoop Dogg was signed to Death Row Records, and apparently, then-CEO Suge Knight wouldn’t approve the collaboration. Still, Warren G managed to keep Snoop’s presence on the track. He admitted that Snoop’s voice remained on the record—though it went undetectable after he lowered the pitch and added sound effects.

Dope!
