In 1990, Digital Underground blessed us with “The Humpty Dance,” which featured Shock G and his alter ego, Humpty Hump. However, many of us—including the good folks at HHAD—thought that Shock and Humpty were two different people. Turns out, we weren’t the only ones.
“It took a while for people to realize it was the same dude,” Lonzo Williams of World Class Wreckin’ Cru said during a video posted on his YouTube channel.
Sure, videos can be deceptive. In hindsight, it should’ve been obvious. But, to play devil’s advocate, Shock G and Humpty appeared in the same scene together when they performed “Same Song” in Chevy Chase’s 1991 film Nothing but Trouble. That only added to the theory that they were, in fact, two different people.
Oh, and let’s not forget about Shock and Humpty cleverly trading bars in “We’re All in the Same Gang.”
Whether you were bamboozled from the get-go or knew better, either way, it speaks to the brilliance of the late Shock G.
