MC Hammer’s “Pumps And A Bumps”; Dope or He Could’ve Kept That?

At one point in the early ’90s, MC Hammer could do no wrong. With hits like “U Can’t Touch This,” “Too Legit to Quit,” and “Turn This Mutha Out,” among many others, he became arguably one of the biggest artists of his era. However, like many legendary artists, not every release was universally embraced. So, does “Pumps and a Bump” fit the bill?

Released in February 1994, “Pumps and a Bump” served as the lead single from The Funky Headhunter, Hammer’s fifth studio album. The track was upbeat, energetic, and undeniably fun, but it also marked a noticeable shift in his sound. It featured a grittier, more street-oriented style and far less Pop appeal than the music that had made him a household name.

“If you wanna kick it with a G, baby, here’s me. ‘Cause I come equipped, I’m a pimp, a slippity slip, I suppose you take a trip.” — MC Hammer

Naturally, the song’s departure from Hammer’s familiar image divided fans. While it wasn’t a complete commercial flop, it peaked at just No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, a modest showing compared to many of his previous chart-topping bangers.

The controversy didn’t end there. The original music video was banned by MTV after the network deemed it too sexually explicit. The video featured Hammer wearing a Speedo while dancing suggestively alongside numerous women in swimsuits. In response, Hammer released a remixed version of the video featuring Deion Sanders.

Despite the criticism, “Pumps and a Bump” still found success. It climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart and was certified Gold, selling more than 500,000 copies.

It’s also worth considering the musical landscape at the time. Compared to what many of his West Coast peers—and even fellow Bay Area artists—were releasing, “Pumps and a Bump” wasn’t particularly shocking. If anything, Hammer was attempting to adapt to the harder-edged sound that was dominating Hip-Hop in the mid-’90s.
