When The Pharcyde released their debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde in 1992, they introduced their offbeat style with the single “Ya Mama.” While the track captured their humor and originality, it didn’t immediately translate into widespread success. That breakthrough came with their second single, “‘Passin’ Me By’.”
According to the group, that moment changed everything.
“Our career didn’t even start until ‘Passin’ Me By’ came out, I feel like,” Fatlip said during a conversation with fellow member Imani in a YouTube Short shared by Unique Access Ent.
“’When ‘Passin’ Me By’ came out, it changed,” Imani added. “The shows changed. The level of everything changed.”
Released in 1993, the single marked a turning point. It climbed to No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 28 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, expanding the group’s reach and elevating their profile. Still, the success didn’t come out of nowhere—The Pharcyde had already been building a loyal following that was ready to grow with them.
In retrospect, The Pharcyde embodied the essence of Hip-Hop authenticity. Often labeled “Alternative Hip-Hop,” they stood apart from the dominant wave of Gangsta Rap that defined the early ’90s. But that distinction wasn’t a limitation—it was the foundation of their appeal.
Their willingness to be different, paired with an unwavering commitment to being themselves, is what built—and continues to sustain—their legacy.
