(R&B) Tank’s ‘Sex, Love, & Pain’; Classic!, Jammin’, Regular, or Not Impressed?

By the turn of the 21st century, R&B had birth a set of new talent. Artists such as Avant, Ashanti, and Tank, among others, made it clear that it was a new act in town. Which the latter and his third album will be the segue to our debate.

Tank released, Sex, Love, & Pain in 2007. The title couldn’t have been more fitting. A plead for such was revealed in the opening track.

“I don’t want nothing, if I can’t have it all,” Tank sings. “If I gotta beg for it on my knees and crawl.”

A relationship is not a relationship if it doesn’t involve imperfections. Admittedly, Tank wasn’t off the hook. His imperfect ways were felt through tracks such as “I’m Coming Home to You” and “Please Don’t Go,” the album’s lead single.

Though a track like “I Hate U” provided the pain part of the album, “My Body” and “When” provided the sex aspect.

Sex, Love, & Pain did extremely well on the charts, reaching number 1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and peaking at the number 2 spot on US Billboard 200.

As far as consistency and longevity go, only handful of artists have achieve that. Especially, when you look at the artists that came into the R&B game around the time Tank came in. Personally, I think he’s apart the R&B elite. But is the album as elite? And if so, how would you rate it?
