D’Angelo, Neo-Soul Artist and Grammy Award-Winner, Dead at 51, RIP

The music industry has suffered a major loss. D’Angelo, one of the forefathers of Neo-Soul, has reportedly died, according to a statement from his family. He was only 51.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” his family said in a statement provided to CNN by RCA.

Born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond VA, D’Angelo helped lay the foundation for Neo-Soul – a subgenre of R&B that fused elemtents of Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop and Rock, often paired with socially conscious lyrics.

Some of D’Angelo’s most beloved hits include “Cruisin’,” “Lady,” “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” and “Nothing Even Matters” – a duet with Lauryn Hill,” among others.

According to a family member, the cause of death was “after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.”
